A Twelfth Stepper is a (one year, minimum, sober) member of AA who is available to talk at length with the caller, explain how they found The Fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous, how they got sober and what life is like for them today. The Twelfth Stepper can arrange to meet up with the caller, take them to a meeting, introduce them to other members and to the 12 Step Programme which we follow.
Responders also take calls from outside agencies; family and friends of the ‘still suffering alcoholic’; and existing members.
The Telephone Liaison Officer (TLO), helps coordinate and facilitate the local helpline, the 12th step lists and, in Somerset, the directories of meetings. They are responsible for co-opting, liaising with and supporting Somerset’s telephone responders, confirming that they have the information they require to ensure that the caller’s needs are met.
Liaison with Dorset’s three Intergroups’ TLOs and the joint service’s Coordinator ensures that the helpline operates effectively and in the best interests of the first time caller to AA in Dorset and Somerset.
“Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety”
